How 3M WaterFactory Reverse Osmosis Works

If your system says Water Factory, CUNO, or 3M on it, you’re looking at the same product line. Water Factory Systems built the original SQC reverse osmosis systems, CUNO later acquired them, and 3M acquired CUNO after that. The 3M water filtration platform has stayed compatible across every version, which means replacement filters and RO membranes are interchangeable whether you own an original SQC unit or a current 3M model.

The water filtration system runs a multi-stage process designed to produce clean drinking water. A sediment filter and pre-carbon filter cartridge catch particles and strip chlorine taste before water hits the RO membrane. The membrane pushes water through a semi-permeable barrier that reduces dissolved solids, lead, cysts, and heavy metals. A carbon post-filter handles final taste and odor polishing through carbon filtration. Clean drinking water sits in a pressurized tank until you open the faucet.

Every filter cartridge uses the Sanitary Quick Change (SQC) design, so replacing a water filter takes a quarter-turn to remove and a quarter-turn to lock the new one in place. There are no tools involved and you never touch the filter media. We carry each stage of 3M water filtration products: the 3MKOSED compatible sediment filter, the 3MKOPRE pre-carbon filter, the 3MKOPST post-carbon filter, and the 3MKOM membrane module. We also stock a complete replacement RO unit for owners looking to refresh the entire reverse osmosis system, plus compatible Aqua Pure water filtration and whole house filter housings for homes that need filtration beyond the kitchen faucet.

When to Replace Your 3M WaterFactory Drinking Water Filters

Replace your pre-filters every 6 to 12 months, post-filters every 12 months, and the RO membrane every 2 to 3 years. Staying on this schedule maintains water quality and protects the membrane from premature wear. If your system uses original Water Factory part numbers like 47-55706G2, 47-55702G2, 66-4706G2, or 47-55710G2, our compatible replacement filters drop right into the same SQC filter housings. The 3M successor part numbers (3MROP310, 3MROP411, 3MROP412, 3MROP416, 3MROM413) all use the same cartridge platform.

Never Miss a Filter Change

A worn-out pre-filter stops catching chlorine and sediment, which means the RO membrane takes the hit and wears out faster. Replacing one set of carbon filters costs a lot less than replacing a membrane early. AutoShip delivers fresh cartridges on the schedule you set, so the system never runs on exhausted filters.
