How Big Blue Sediment Filters Work
Big Blue sediment filters work by physically trapping particulate matter as water passes through the filter media. The W303 and W304 are 5-micron filters, meaning they capture particles 5 microns and larger, including dirt, sand, rust, and other suspended solids that enter from the water supply.
Unlike carbon filters, sediment filters do not use any chemical or adsorptive process. They are purely mechanical. Water enters the outside surface of the cartridge and passes inward through the filter media, leaving particulate behind. As the filter accumulates trapped material, flow resistance increases, which is why a noticeable drop in water pressure across the house is one of the clearest signs that the cartridge is due for replacement.
The 4.5" diameter body of Big Blue cartridges provides a significantly larger filtration surface area than standard 2.5" cartridges used in point-of-use systems. This higher capacity supports whole-house flow rates without the pressure drop that a smaller cartridge would create at the same usage level.

When to Replace Your Big Blue Sediment Filter
Replace your Big Blue sediment cartridge every 6 to 12 months as a general guideline. Actual service life depends on your water source and sediment load.
