How Big Blue Carbon Block Filters Work
KX Matrikx carbon block filters use a dense block of activated carbon to reduce chlorine, taste, and odor from your household water supply. Unlike granular activated carbon (GAC) filters, where water can channel through gaps in loose media, carbon block construction forces all water to pass through the solid carbon matrix. This ensures consistent contact between the water and the carbon across the full flow rate, which makes carbon block filters more reliable than GAC at reducing chlorine and related taste and odor compounds.
The W301 uses KX Matrikx +CTO/2 technology (Part# 32-425-125-975), known as "The Workhorse" for its reliable performance in demanding whole-house applications. The W302B uses KX Matrikx +5 technology (Part# 02-425-125-20) in the 20" format, providing a larger carbon mass and longer service life between cartridge changes. Both install in standard Big Blue 4.5"-diameter housings.

When to Replace Your Big Blue Carbon Filters
Replace your Big Blue carbon block filter every 6 to 12 months. Carbon media has a finite adsorption capacity, and once it is saturated, chlorine and taste compounds pass through rather than being captured.
Unlike a sediment filter, a spent carbon filter does not always produce a noticeable pressure drop, so replacing on a scheduled interval is more reliable than waiting for a symptom.
